Cobalt Labs

A developer tooling startup needed a mark that said precision without saying corporate. One geometric letterform. Two weights. Zero ambiguity.

01 — The Problem

Trusted at first glance.

Cobalt Labs builds infrastructure tooling for engineering teams. Their previous identity was generic — a wordmark in Inter, slightly bolded, blue. It disappeared in a GitHub README and looked amateur next to competitors like Linear and Vercel.

02 — The Brief

Mark, not mascot.

We needed a standalone symbol — not a wordmark — that worked as a 16px favicon, a 512px app icon, and a 4-metre conference banner. Geometric. Unambiguous. Ownable. No gradients, no 3D, no trends.

03 — The Mark

The double C — precision in two strokes.

Two concentric arcs. The outer stroke is primary weight — commanding at large scale. The inner echo is 35% opacity — a secondary layer that reads as depth at display sizes and collapses cleanly to a single ring at 16px. The open terminus faces right: forward motion, open systems.

The Cobalt Labs mark shipped in 11 days across a Standard engagement. It anchored their Series A deck, became their GitHub org avatar, and was laser-cut into the reception wall of their new San Francisco office. The founding team described it as “the first thing that made us feel like a real company.”
